Project Summary

AquaNEX encourages the use of innovative technologies and systems in order to promote, preserve and protect resource efficiency, in accordance with EU, national, regional and local policies and initiatives (Water Framework Directive (WFD), NEXUS approach, INSPIRE Directive, Habitats Directive, Greek Law 3199/03, River Basin Management Plans, etc). AquaNEX contributes to the wider strategy on water resources sustainability in the cross border area via the development and application of innovative monitoring tools and their fusion to the national and local policies. As far as the Greek part is concerned, except from the EU policies the project is in line with the National, Regional and Local policies and more specifically with the “Regional Water Management Plan for the Area of Western Macedonia” which promotes the restoration of water bodies quality. Furthermore, the “Regional Operational Programme under the Investments for Growth and Jobs goal for the Western Macedonia” deems necessary to invest in the water sector so as to meet the requirements of the Union’s environmental acquis and to address the needs identified by the Member States. In addition AquaNEx will have significant contribution to the Albanian water law concerning the water resources according to which the water users are obliged to ensure water protection against pollution and maintain water quality.

The overall AquaNEX objective is to enable sustainable water resource management in the CB area and enhance its efficiency within the WFD with the application of advanced water monitoring tools. This is accomplished by ensuring technical compliance of CB Albania to WFD; paving the way for harmonizing national Albanian legislation to WFD; and updating water quality monitoring systems in pilot areas with innovative technology while further applying WFD.
